Abstract

This research aimed to study the probable influence of the domestic sewage in the mangrove ecosystem. The field study were taken over Itanhaém’s estuarine region, State of São Paulo, from August 1996 to August 1998. The main geochemical parameters concerning sediments were analyzed which facilitated this ecosystem’s preliminar knowledge. Three mangrove areas have been chosen for this study: two areas next to the effluents launching of the districts, and a third one located on a protected zone over the Itanhaém River, which was used as a control. The young plants growth was observed and a qualitative analysis of the present fauna was made in these areas. The results showed that the polluents provide to a mangrove plants larger development and also contributed to an organic material raise. The polluents have also been responsible for the presence of air, aquatic and land fauna in region.
