Abstract

This study had as basic motivation the characterization of the sport fishing operations in the northwestern region of São Paulo State, including the municipality of Pereira Barreto, Palmeira D' Oeste, Jales, Dolcinópolis and Fernandopolis. Visits were made to nine lakes of sport fishing. An open type questionnaire was applied at each visit, of a general characterization of the establishment. Some of the questions concerned the topics: agrarian land property, environment, and clients profile, among others. The establishment characterization that hold sport fishing operations present two basic formats: a) those that utilize "fee fishing" as an alternative income to the agriculture business, and b) those with their main income originating from the "fee fishing" operations. The land property condition of the establishments and the fishing lakes are composed mostly by private property, with a typically familiar administration. The fishing operations studied were mostly associated with agriculture activities and, in a second extent, with recreation and tourism. The fisherman client is characterized by a constant public, that moves around very close. In general, the topics related to the environment in the establishment are not so internalized by the fishing operators yet.
