The process of urbanization brought about innumerable environmental alterations, modifying the operation of the local hydrologic cycle, causing frequent flooding, reduction of soil water infiltration and erosion. As an alternative for improvement in the environmental balance of urban hydrographic basins, SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) arose. This system is an evolution of the sanitary-hygienic concept of urban drainage systems, for in addition to the concern for public health, it seeks to solve or reduce urban environmental problems. This is made possible by means of systems that seek to increase soil water infiltration and reduce surface drainage. The objective of this article is to present the main devices connected with the SUDS concept. It presents a review of the characteristics of these devices, as well as an analysis regarding the main advantages and disadvantages of these sustainable systems. It may be concluded that SUDS, in general, offers a good cost-benefit ratio for its implantation in urban areas.Downloads
